New WhatsApp feature to allow YouTube videos to play directly from the app

In order to remain competitive against the multitude of instant messaging applications such as Facebook Messenger , Google Allo and others (including the possible Amazon Anytime ), WhatsApp  continues to improve in small touches. In version 2.17.40, currently beta on iOS, the application offers a YouTube video player in picture-in-picture .

Spotted by WABetaInfo , this feature can play a YouTube video directly in the discussion without having to change window (or be redirected to the App Store for those without the application installed from Google). The footage is then displayed in a floating window that the user can enlarge or move as he pleases. However, a change of the chat window causes the video to be closed.

On iOS only?

For now, this feature is only available in beta on iOS. Nothing has yet been announced for Android or Windows smartphones. On Android, however, it will be necessary to wait for the arrival of Android O in order to benefit on smartphones since this update brings, among others, the native support of Picture-in-Picture for applications . But when we know the speed of deployment of updates on Android , it may be necessary to wait a while .
