One thing you should do if you ever find a grenade is to call the authorities immediately. It may seem like a no-brainer, but after seeing what happened to a man in Florida it’s worth remembering.
A Taco Bell in Ocala, Florida, had to be evacuated after a fisherman came across a hand grenade while fishing with a magnet and decided to take it to a local Taco Bell, according to the Ocala Police Department. The man was not identified by the police, but apparently, he had been fishing in Ocklawaha when he discovered the grenade. The police said that after arriving at the fast food restaurant, he decided to call them.
It is not clear why he chose to drive to the Taco Bell before alerting the authorities, but no one was injured during this incident. A bomb squad of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene “to ensure everyone’s safety.”
“The bomb squad withdrew the grenade without incident and warned that it would be eliminated in an appropriate manner,” the Ocala Police Department said in a statement.
According to the report, the man alerted the authorities around 5 pm, at which time the Taco Bell was evacuated. After two hours, the Ocala Police Department tweeted that the restaurant had reopened normally.
The police identified the grenade as “an authentic hand grenade from World War II,” although it is not clear what type. According to an image of the object it could be an American Mk 2 grenade.
Actually, finding old weapons by means of magnets is not as rare as you might imagine. The BBC reported last year that bomb squads in the United Kingdom receive calls “regularly” from places where people fishing with magnets find pieces of live ammunition. One teenager who spoke with the BBC about this hobby said he had found weapons and even an active grenade while fishing with a magnet. As the BBC explained and you probably imagined, this is the reason why this hobby can be dangerous.
Anyway, if you hit a potentially explosive weapon while fishing with a magnet, call the police first.
