How to Introduce Yourself in a Seminar or Presentation

Congratulations! Talking at a seminar is a fantastic opportunity and to convince your audience, it would be wise to work on your presentation. The typical audience is more attentive at the beginning and at the end of a presentation. Therefore, spending more time to perfect the beginning of your speech and your presentation can truly be beneficial.

1. Taking into account the fundamental principles

Choose the appropriate Time. The time allocated should be precise. In other words, it must be “just perfect”. If you take too long, you will lose time to the audience and if you take too little, it will be disoriented. In general, your introduction should last less than 30 seconds.

  • This is not a time when you need to recite your resume in speed or share your weekend getaways with people.
  • Always keep in mind that your audience is made up of busy people. They took time in their day to come and follow your presentation. Respect this time and do not waste it.

Decide how you want to handle the issues. You must decide in advance and indicate in your introduction if you will allow interruptions during your speech or if you prefer that the questions reach you at the end of your seminar. In any event, be sure to organize your time so as to allow for a period essentially reserved for questions. Book 10% of the duration of the seminar for questions.

  • This means that for a one-hour talk you have to spend 10 minutes for questions and 45 to 50 minutes for the seminar.
  • For an interval of 15 minutes, you will need 1 to 2 minutes for questions and 13 minutes for your presentation.

Identify the purpose of your seminar. Now, before formulating the rest of your presentation, you must identify the purpose of your seminar. There are three main categories of seminar: the work seminar, the pedagogical seminar and the persuasive seminar. Each of these categories has very different purposes. The type of seminar must be identified.

  • The work seminar. This is a discussion about work and where the goal is to be impressive, professional and competent.
  • The pedagogical seminar. It is essentially organized for educational purposes. It’s about inspiring, informing and educating your audience.
  • The persuasive seminar. This seminar is an “invitation to action” or a “sales speech”. The aims pursued here are to persuade, motivate and sympathize.
  • Your seminar could take into account more than one category, but there should be one that works best. Identify it as well as the objectives it meets. The manner in which these objectives will be used to select the material needed for your presentation will be discussed in the following.

2. Talk At A Workshop

Seek to impress. You should use the introduction of your work seminar to impress by demonstrating that you are well qualified (focus on demonstration and not on chatter).

  • Interviews are also a good time to evaluate your personality and no one will want to work with a pretentious boastful. Therefore, your presentation is not the time to brag and list all the outstanding things you have already done.
  • The incredible accomplishments that are worth sharing are those that are directly appropriate for your seminar. However, even in this case, there are some that must be subtly addressed in your presentation.
  • However, it would be appropriate to share your pedigree. You must provide your name, current academic and professional affiliations, and your current level of education or training. If necessary, you can communicate on some of your previous trainings.

Go directly to the introduction of your presentation. Proceed directly to the introduction of your presentation after mentioning your background or training. After all, the audience already knows who you are at a seminar. What participants or questioners will want to know is what you can do for them and as such, they will want to know your skills. Take action and engage in discussion.

Read this example.

  • Hi, my name is Lenerd. I’m from Caltech. I was trained by Bill Lumbergh. For some time now, I have been leading a team that has designed and implemented new cover sheets that have increased productivity. Today I will discuss my work on the design of new cover sheets, my methods of controlling the adoption of the new cover sheet system and the results of this new process of operations.

Raise all that the speaker does well in the example.

  • The speaker briefly outlined his pedigree and his qualifications, Hi my name is Lenerd. I’m from Initech. I was trained by Bill Lumbergh.
  • He added subtle bragging, For some time I have been leading a team that designed and set up.
  • Subsequently, the speaker subtly referred to some useful skills in the introduction of the presentation. Today I will discuss my work on the design of new cover sheets, my methods of controlling the adoption of the new cover sheet system and the results of this new process of operations. It, therefore, suggests in this sentence that it can develop and implement new management systems and monitor their adoption, the skills by which its interrogators are likely to be interested.

Take notes. Now that you have determined that you are about to express yourself at a work seminar and have identified your goals, you can write your own introduction. You can use the previous example as a draft when you write. Obviously, you have to adapt this to your own professional background, goals and qualifications. Keep in mind that your introduction to a work seminar is the right time to point your references and boast a bit. All you have to do is make sure that this is subtly presented.

Practice. Once you have written your introduction, repeat it in the presence of your colleagues or friends. Be sure to receive honest feedback from them before the big day. Rewrite and repeat your introduction as necessary based on the feedback received.

3. Talk at an Educational seminar

Keep in mind that your goal here is to inform and entertain. You must be sociable and relevant. In this case, the simple fact that you are teaching means that you are already recognized as an expert. It is therefore not necessary to impress your audience with your training or pedigree unless it is special or interesting.

  • Educational seminars are often more relaxed. On many occasions, these presentations often lend themselves to jokes or exchanges on current events. If you use anecdotes or jokes, you need to make sure of their relevance. In fact, these techniques must be used to mobilize your audience, not just to distract.

Make sure your presentation is brief and simple. You will spend more time introducing your personality and your subject. Keep in mind that you must be enthusiastic. Still, you will have to give your students the desire to listen. The best way to do this is to HAVE TO ENVOY talking about the subject, which is why you need to give the impression that it is.

Read this example.

  • My name is Lenerd, I work at Initech as an IT manager. I’m very pleased to be here today to talk to you about the cover sheets. For years I have been a manager, I have discovered that I am always trying to strike a balance between productivity and staff morale, a struggle I am sure you are all used to. Today I’m going to talk about a new system of cover sheets that we recently put in place at Initech to increase productivity and our results on both morale and performance. I hope this will help you put in place your own management mechanisms.

Note what has been done well in the example:

  • The speaker spent relatively little time bragging or indicating his references and qualifications. He just mentioned who he is and where he came from. My name is Lenerd, I work at Initech as IT manager. After that, he quickly became interested in what he had come to teach.
  • He made sure to express a certain enthusiasm for the subject, I am very delighted.
  • The speaker made the effort to mobilize the audience, I am sure you are all accustomed.
  • The speaker tried to guide the audience on the purpose of this learning experience, this will help you to set up your own management mechanisms.

Take notes. Now that you have determined that you are at an educational seminar and have identified your goals, you can write your own presentation. You can use the above example as a draft at the time of writing. Of course, you will have to adapt this to your own professional background, goals and qualifications. Remember to express your enthusiasm for the topic in the introduction.

Practice. Once you have written your introduction, repeat it in the presence of your colleagues or friends. Be sure to receive honest feedback from them before the big day. Rewrite and repeat your introduction as necessary based on the feedback received.

4. Talk at a persuasive seminar

Understand that the objective here is to “persuade” or “sell”. Unlike an interview, you are not selling yourself (unless you are a politician) but rather selling a service or product. So, you should avoid spending too much time on your skills or pedigree. Instead, spend your time mobilizing your audience and telling people the problem you can solvefor them with your service or product.

  • Hi, my name is Lenerd, I work at Initech as IT manager. I’m very pleased to be here today to talk to you about our new cover sheet system. For years as a manager, I have found that I always strive to strike a balance between productivity and staff morale. It is a struggle that I am sure you are all used to. Today I am going to talk about a new system of cover sheets that can improve both productivity as well as morale within your company.

Note what has been done well in the example.

  • The speaker spent relatively little time boasting or indicating his qualifications. He simply pointed out who he is and where he comes from. My name is Lenerd, I work at Initech as an IT manager. Then he directly told the audience why he is there. This kind of speech is similar to that of the pedagogical seminar.
  • The speaker made the effort to mobilize the audience, I am sure you are all accustomed. This style is also similar to that of the pedagogical seminar.
  • The speaker quickly informed the public why the speech was worth listening to and listening to. This has been done through the presentation of a common problem to solve, I always try to find a balance between the productivity and morale of the staff and the promise of a solution with its product, today I will maintain on a new system of cover sheets that can improve both productivity and morale. The fact of posing a problem that you promise to solve is a method specific to the style of the persuasive seminar.

Take notes. Now that you have determined that you are at a persuasive seminar and have identified your goals, you can then write your own presentation. You can use the above example as a draft at the time of writing. Of course, you will have to adapt this to your own professional background, goals and qualifications. Keep in mind that by attending a persuasive seminar you need to focus on your common experiences and be sure to tell participants early on what problems you can solve for them.

Practice. Once you have written your introduction, repeat it in the presence of your colleagues or friends. Be sure to receive honest feedback from them before the big day. Rewrite and repeat your introduction as necessary based on the feedback received.
