A dispute between a mountain guide and a climber escalated into a physical confrontation on the exposed Mürztalersteig near Austria’s Grossglockner on August 22.
The encounter, recorded by the climber and later posted to Instagram, took place at approximately 10,000 feet above sea level.
The climber was traveling with his wife toward the Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte when they encountered a mountain guide accompanied by two clients. According to the climber’s account, he had stopped to give his wife more space on the via ferrata when the guide moved between the couple while passing, triggering a heated exchange.
Video footage shows the confrontation continuing on the narrow, exposed terrain. Austrian media reported that the footage shows the guide grabbing the climber.
The incident has prompted both police and professional action. Police in Matrei in Osttirol opened an investigation following a complaint concerning suspected endangerment of physical safety.
The Kalser Mountain and Ski Guides Association ended its cooperation with the guide. The Austrian Association of Mountain and Ski Guides also condemned the conduct and referred the matter for disciplinary proceedings.
The guide subsequently relinquished his mountain-guide license after disciplinary proceedings began.
Overtaking is a normal part of alpine climbing, particularly when groups move at different speeds. But at 10,000 feet above sea level, on narrow and exposed terrain, a physical confrontation can create serious safety risks.
The video provides a record of the encounter, while the police investigation will determine the circumstances and any potential legal consequences.
